Historical Wife Swap
January 17, 2011
Growing up, I attended a Lutheran Church, and as a child, for the longest time I thought the father of the Protestant Reformation, Martin Luther, was also the father of Martin Luther King, Jr. This made for some very confusing Sunday School lessons and a curiousity as to how Martin Luther's son someone also became a king. And in my typical stubborn, independent way, I refused to ask the necessary questions to straighten out this conundrum, lest I look stupid or ignorant.
I'm certain my Martin Luther/Martin Luther King Jr mix-up wasn't the only mistaken case of identity my little mind made, though I can't recall any others off the cuff. A scene from the movie Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure illustrates a few other possible flubs, when the heroes tell their history teacher that Joan of Arc was Noah's wife, and that Caesar must be the founder of a pizza chain.
Do you remember any historical mix-ups from your youth? What were they? |
