Lynton & Exmoor
November 8, 2010

Southcliffe Guest HouseView from our room at SouthcliffeSoaked and rumpled from hiking in the rain at Tintagel, we made our way north over the mist-shrouded roads to the village of Lynton. Lynton lies on the steep, tree-covered cliffs at the northwestern edge of Exmoor, while the village of Lynmouth rests on the bottom of the slope down by the sea. Lynton is a small, mainly Victorian village perched on the clifftop 130m above, looking out to sea across the Bristol Channel to the Welsh Coast. Our Bed-and-Breakfast stood on the main street across from the pretty church with a Norman font and 13th century tower. Southcliffe Guest House was a lovely Victorian townhouse owned by friendly and hospitable hosts. After navigating the tight parking area, we were greeted warmly and served hot tea to thaw our cold, rain-soaked bodies.

Lynton ChurchThe rain showers ended as the sun began to set, and we set off through the quaint streets of Lynton in search of a warm meal. We settled on a tiny restaurant near the middle of town called Buttertubs and enjoyed a delicious meal of hearty beef stew, roast and potatoes, and apple dumplings for dessert. Strolling home at twilight, we expressed our wish that we could have had more time and better weather to explore such a picturesque locale.

Cottage Hospital - LyntonBreakfast the next day was delicious, and after a quick trek to the Pharmacy to purchase sinus medication for a sinus cold that had set in the previous evening, we headed out across Exmoor National Park, past Watersmeet, Malmsmead and Oare (Lorna Doone country) toward Dunster. We paused at several turn-offs to take pictures of the beautiful countryside, including shots of the Bristol Channel where we could faintly make out the Welsh coast in the distance.
