MANor Candy Monday - Inverness Castle
February 24, 2014

This week's MANor Candy is Inverness Castle, located in the heart of Inverness, Scotland on a cliff overlooking the River Ness. There has been a castle at this site since 1057, but the red sandstone structure standing there today was not built until 1836. It currently houses Inverness Sheriff Court. A statue of Jacobite heroine Flora MacDonald and her dog erected in 1899 stands at the front of the castle. I was fortunate enough to visit the grounds, and stay in a bed and breakfast just up the hill from the castle in 2010. Across the river stands Inverness Cathedral, and from the riverside walk it's easy to see the rolling hillside of the Highlands not so far in the distance.
