It's a Wrap!
December 15, 2009
So, many of you will probably think I’m crazy, but I love to wrap. That’s wrap with a w, not the music version. (Though I did do a rap in church when I was a teenager—but that’s another story.)
Anyway, I love to wrap—gifts.
Nothing puts me in the holiday spirit more than swathing presents in pretty paper and a bow. Perhaps this is because as an older child my mother would recruit me to help wrap gifts for my five other siblings. (That’s a lot of wrapping.) It was fun being locked away in my parents’ bedroom the day before Christmas surrounded by presents and wrapping paper and gift tags and bows. My Mom would pop in and out, telling me which gifts went to whom, and my Dad would usually stop by and ask me to wrap my mother’s presents as well. Helping them out in that way made me feel special. And it was also fun being in the know. Even though they tried, my siblings never convinced me to tell them what they were getting. I simply enjoyed having the power of that knowledge too much—even if it only lasted a day.
To this day, I still volunteer to help my mother wrap gifts. I’ve even gotten my younger sister in on it, so that we have a “Wrap” Party—just the girls. When I spend Christmas with my husband’s family in Alabama, my mother-in-law has also started asking me to help wrap gifts, because I admitted I like to do it.
Do you have a Christmas “chore” that you secretly love doing? |
