Tuning In
October 10, 2012

I have to say, I'm not much of a TV watcher.  I would simply rather read or do something else with my free time.  Although, now that we have a DVR, I do find I watch more than I used to.  I have my regular line-up of shows I record, and I love when late September and late January roll around and we get to check out the new shows the networks debut.  But rarely do any of the new shows make it into my regular line-up.  It's not that I dislike everything else on TV.  I just don't care enough to be bothered if I miss them.  When illness or boredom rolls around, and I want to veg in front of the TV I can find plenty of things to watch.  I simply don't want to reorganize my schedule around them.

However, sometimes I change my mind.  Like in the case of NCIS.  I stopped watching it regularly after the first few seasons, though I did often find myself catching the reruns, particularly when large blocks of them started to be shown on USA.  Then in the middle of the season last year, I started to DVR the new episodes when they aired.  I decided that apparently I did want to watch them.

I have also been known to stumble upon a show that has already aired for many seasons and discover I like it.  This happened with How I Met Your Mother, which my husband regularly watched, and eventually sucked me into watching, too.  In the case of Bones it was more a matter of opportunity.  I had always wanted to watch the show, but never bothered to make the time.  And then this summer I found myself with the time and the will, and started watching season one on Netflix.  I loved it, and have now almost caught up with the latest season currently airing on TV this fall.

Now that I think about it, I do have a tendency to latch onto shows late.  I jumped into Big Bang Theory during the second season.  The same with Mythbusters.  And only after our trip to the UK in 2010, did I start watching Top Gear (the original, British version, please) when we came home, after catching several episodes over there.  I also love Masterpiece on PBS, but I can't tell you how many times I've stumbled into one of their new series during the second episode.  It's very vexing.

The one new show that seems to be sticking with me this year interestingly is also the one I was most worried about the American networks mucking up.  Yes, you've guessed right, it's Elementary.  I love Sherlock Holmes, and the new movies starring Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law, as well as the BBC series Sherlock are bloody brilliant.  So when I heard CBS had also jumped on the bandwagon I was skeptical.  But I'm happy to say that it appears I was wrong.  I'm actually quite enjoying this new spin on Sherlock.  It's just different enough from the others to be distinct and American, but doesn't stray far enough from the original to drive the purist in me mad.

What about you?  What shows are in your regular line-up?  Anything new you've added into the fold?
