Driving Me Crazy
November 30, 2009

I don’t mind long car trips, though I prefer to be the one doing most of the driving. It gives me time to think, and listen to music, and enjoy the countryside—be it the flat fields of Indiana, the mountains of Tennessee, or the rolling hills of pine trees in Alabama. Sure my back starts to hurt after awhile and you begin to get a little stir crazy being stuck in a car, but by and large it’s quite an enjoyable experience. What I hate are the other drivers on the road who can make my trip not so pleasant.

So, I’ve compiled a list of my most dreaded fellow drivers, starting with potentially the most lethal.

1)      Crazy, speeding semis. You know the ones—where the truck driver thinks he’s piloting a tiny sports car and zips in and out of lanes in heavy traffic. I cringe at every close call and choose to keep my distance lest I become his next near victim. Inevitably, there is never a cop around when this maniac is loose.
2)      The driver who will not pick a speed and stick to it. When on the interstate, I like to set my cruise control and just go. It drives me absolutely bonkers when another vehicle is continuously passing me and then slowing down so that I have to pass them. I don’t understand why they feel the need to play highway leapfrog.
3)      The driver who sits in the passing lane. Why has this problem become epidemic? Is it stubbornness, a belief that we and we alone own the road? The rules of the road are simple: if you are not passing someone, get out of the passing lane. Now, I have no problem with people driving in the passing lane when no one else is going faster than they are, I do this, too. But when another vehicle comes up behind you and wants to go around you, get over!
4)      And last, but not least, the driver who tailgates so close you can’t see their front bumper and you’re going 75mph. Needless to say, this is just an accident waiting to happen.

What types of drivers literally drive you crazy? Are you guilty of any of the things above that irritate me?
