Beachy Head - The Other White Cliffs - repost
September 7, 2011
Day 2 began with a drive up to Beachy Head. Located on the white chalk cliffs, much like the white cliffs of Dover, just west of Eastbourne, Beachy Head is truly a sight to see, especially on a brilliant, sunny day with the deep blue of the English Channel sparkling below you. Beachy Head lighthouse stands proudly at the base of the 530 ft cliffs, a warning to ships sailing to close to shore. The South Downs Way, a popular hiking trail, begins at Beachy Head, and continues along the coast to Birling Gap, a village just a short distance away with fantastic views of the Seven Sisters – seven chalk hills that end abruptly as they meet the sea. Sheep dot the verdant green countryside, natural lawn mowers for this grassy patch of England. The beauty of the sea and the awesome grandeur of the cliffs made this one of my favorite sights.
