Cats and Bathwater
November 9, 2009

My cat is strange. She has a nice, fresh bowl of water setting out on the kitchen floor and still she would prefer to drink the nasty, soap-scum-filled liquid at the bottom of our shower or bathtub after my husband or I bathe. When we open the bathroom door, Pita is waiting oh-so-patiently to come inside. She slips past us, rubbing herself against our legs as if to say “thank you” and then makes a beeline for the bathing apparatus still dripping water. There are days when I find this action just too disgusting and yell at her to stop. She obeys, but only until I leave the room.

I honestly do not understand this. My husband thinks perhaps the soap makes the water sweet somehow. I just think it’s gross. And it makes me particularly cautious about rinsing all of the cleaner down the drain so that my kitty doesn’t get a dose of Comet or Scrubbing Bubbles with her daily intake of water. Thank goodness we keep the toilet seats down.
