In the U.S., the Nitro went into production in August 2006 and went on sale in September of the same year as a 2007 model. All Nitros were available with rear-wheel drive, and part-time four-wheel drive was available as an option. The Nitro was Dodge's SUV until the 2009 model year, when the larger, car-based Dodge Journey crossover SUV priced below it, arrived in showrooms. Compared to its shared platform with the Jeep Liberty, the Nitro is longer, lower, and wider.Safety features such as electronic roll mitigation, traction control, and side curtain airbags, as well as a functional sliding cargo floor called Load 'N Go were also offered as standard equipment. Similar to a system offered on the Saab 9-5 station wagon, the floor can be extended through the rear hatch by 18 in (457 mm) to ease loading. Both trims came with a standard 210-hp 3.7 L V6 engine. I have shopped around and I got the best deal from Supreme Auto. Thank you to the staff at Supreme and I will be recommending you to my friends and family! He was very accommodating. Miles and price beyond my desired range. Drove 85 miles to see a vehicle to find out it wasn't there. They said it should be back in a day or two, was being worked on - it's been a week and still nothing. Didn't want that car anyway. It's based on the Jeep Liberty, and has an old-school body design atop the sturdy truck-style platform. Compared to other midsize sport utility vehicles, the Nitro is on the smaller side, and reviewers praise it for its maneuverability. They're also a nod to the Nitro's Jeep roots. The front grille, on the other hand, is all Dodge Ram; the fierce-looking front end seems a little misplaced on this cartoony bodystyle. Still, it's got its charm, and the folks at Chrysler have high hopes for the new brand. Not like many of the other vehicles in this category.Just a few touches really made the vehicle sharp. The rims really bring it out. The dealer has changed the oil every time but twice. I did myself the other two times. The dealer does a reminder call ever three months to bring in for an oil change. After all, over 30 million shoppers use CarGurus to find great deals on used cars and new cars in their area. Showing Nitro SXT. The size class for cars is determined by the interior passenger and cargo volumes. The size class for trucks is defined by the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), which is the weight of the vehicle and its carrying capacity.EPA re-tests about 10% of vehicle models to confirm manufacturers’ results. This is typically measured in liters (3.2L, for example), though sometimes it is expressed in cubic inches. I-4 and V-6 refer to the configuration and number of cylinders.Transmissions must either be controlled manually by the driver (“Manual Transmission”) or automatically by the vehicle (“Automatic Transmission”). One type of Automatic Transmission is the Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT) which doesn’t have a fixed number of gears.Common configurations include front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.Select Ram in the Make menu. Two trims are available: the base SXT and the uplevel SLT. Both can be ordered with two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, the four-wheel-drive being operated through a knob on the console.

The SXT comes standard with traction and stability controls, 16-inch styled steel wheels, four-wheel ABS disc brakes, power mirrors, air conditioning, power locks, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Along with the aforementioned four-speed, the SLT trim adds extra interior equipment and 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lamps, heated mirrors, power seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, cruise control, and a slew of exterior appearance bits. The Nitro's cockpit looks fairly modern. Faux brushed aluminum accents draw attention to the center stack and most of the controls are easy to reach. The bucket seats are comfortable. The front passenger seatback folds flat, creating a longer load floor for tall objects, and has a molded tray that can accommodate most laptop computers. Completing the package is the Load N' Go cargo floor, which is standard on the SLT. This hard plastic platform slides out up to 18 inches to make loading and unloading cargo easier. One side has a fiber mat that helps to prevent cargo from sliding around, and the other side is easy-to-clean plastic. Six cargo hooks make strapping gear down a snap, and the hooks fold away when they are not needed. The platform can support up to 400 pounds and is a great example of an inexpensive item that adds more than its weight in versatility. A six-disc CD changer can be added to the standard audio system on the SXT and SLT, and a navigation system can be tacked onto the SLT, as can upgraded speakers and the MyGIG multimedia system. Sunroof, satellite radio, hands-free communication, and a trailer tow group are other notable options. These vehicles may have a loose or missing brand emblem in the center of the steering wheel. The loose emblem or the securing nuts for the emblem within the driver air bag module may become projectiles in the event of a driver air bag deployment. The recall is expected to begin August 26, 2020. Sue Brown 5.0 out of 5 stars Really no major problems until this year. Love the plug in. Really don't want to give it up. Really hate all the new technology in vehicles now. Backup screens? Really. Just something to brake. I would buy it again. That's rediculous! Senior Citizens are on fixed income. Can't afford a car payment bigger than my house payment. Makes no sense. Refuse to downgrade to a little car. Not doing it and buying a used car is like buying someone else's headache.I have over 145,. Make sure your tracking all the recalls and TSBs. The dealership took care of all the recalls.Tank was replaced and that solved the problem.Love this truck. Always kept up the maintenance. Reg oil changes, 3 sets of tires, lots of brakes, 1 battery and ll the tune-ups. Runs like its still new. 12 years old now, could use some new floor matts, freon ran out of the A.C. end of last summer, needs recharge. Drivers leather seat has seen better days but its still intact, had to change the master window control switch once, and the navigation software needs to be updated. What do you expect from a 12 year old truck with 200,000K. Just have to have them cleaned up and remounted, can be annoying. Other than that. Truck has been good to me. All these people complaining about their Nitros are cheap lazy, IDIOTS. Learn to take care of your vehicles, and they will take care of you.I bought it brand new and put 45K miles the first year. Changed my oil often though. Only problem I ran into was the constant chirp from the power syeering belt. Which I solved by purchasing a slightly shorter belt.

I now have over 200K miles its still hanging with no check engines lights on. It's been good to me. Yet, I do take car of all my vehicles by changing the oil and filter when required. That first year I think I changed the oil and filter almost every odd weekend.Along with the brakes needing replaced fairly often and replacing the lifts for the tailgate after they went out. Transmission started slipping this year also. Other than maintenance issues it has excellent handling and is an easy ride. But I would go with a newer model with some of these kinks worked out.Spacious interior. Roof rack is handy. 120VAC outlet that can be turned on and off on front console. Change between 2WD and 4WD on the fly. Pretty peppy from the line. When I bought this Nitro It came with a lifetime powertrain warranty. L still love my Nitro after all these yearsShowing Nitro SXT. Relatively tidy exterior dimensions take the hassle out of negotiating traffic and tight quarters. In reality, though, Nitro works best as a style statement, trailing such crossover SUVs as the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander for power, drivetrain refinement, and rear-seat accommodations. Smaller than Dodge’s Durango, Nitro measured 4 inches longer overall than the Liberty. Dodge emphasized the Nitro’s youthful appeal, but potential rivals ranged from the Ford Explorer and Honda Pilot to the Hyundai Santa Fe and Mazda CX-7. A four-speed automatic was standard in the SLT and optional for base models.Manual-transmission versions could have part-time four-wheel drive that should not be left engaged on dry pavement. Models with automatic were available with all-wheel drive. Neither drive system included low-range gearing. Options included a navigation system, DVD entertainment, and a wireless cell phone link. Newly available was Chrysler’s uconnect multimedia suite, which could include a wireless cell-phone link, 30-gigabyte hard drive for storing digital music and picture files, and a navigation system.

Manual-shift Nitros could have part-time four-wheel drive rather than the standard rear-drive. Automatic-transmission models may be equipped with all-wheel drive. The Environmental Protection Agency changed its procedure for 2008 to yield more realistic estimates. Therefore, estimated mileage is lower than for prior years. An SLT with automatic starts off capably, but labors in highway merging or passing, and it takes a deep stab at the throttle to coax a downshift. Chrysler recommends 89-octane for the 4.0 V6. Well-controlled cornering lean enhances their sporty demeanor. Good overall brake feel was compromised on one test Nitro, which suffered inconsistent stopping action. Controls are simple, clearly marked, and logically positioned. Nitro cabins are finished in hard plastic. Unconvincing faux metal and most other trim cause Nitro to lag well behind class competitors. High-set seats provide a commanding view of the road, though visibility is hindered somewhat by rather thick center and rear roof pillars. Underseat foot space also suffices. The split bench backseat is comfortable and fairly supportive, though the narrow cabin means three-abreast seating is best reserved for short jaunts. Cabin storage is limited to the narrow center console and modest-sized glovebox. With the exception of Value, these numbers reflect how the vehicle compares against the universe of vehicles, not just against rivals in its class. Lower is better) Dealers will reprogram the ABS electronic control module with new software that prevents this condition. Inoperative wipers under inclement weather conditions could cause impaired visibility increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will inspect and add external relays and update the totally integrated power module software to control the wiper functions. If the drive shaft breaks, it could strike the transfer case tunnel hard enough to deploy the airbags. This could result in brake failure without warning, which could cause a crash.

Chrysler will replace the brake booster input rod retaining clip free of charge. This could lead to loss of brake fluid and reduced braking performance increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the brake tubes free of charge. This could compromise the ability of the steering column to support the occupant loads in the event of a frontal crash, decreasing the effectiveness of the frontal impact safety system. As a result, the condition may increase the potential for injury in a frontal crash. Dealers will inspect for rivet presence and alignment and repair the steering column pivot as required, free of charge. Requires Infinity sound system. The editors at TheCarConnection.com also drove the Dodge Nitro, and have added driving impressions and details where they help you to make a better purchasing decision. One look at this five-passenger mid-size SUV and you swear this truck was fast, agile, and ready for a street shoot-out.Under the exciting bodywork is a Jeep Liberty. The Liberty is not known for terrific on-road prowess, and neither is the 2008 Nitro. To be as blunt as the Nitro's styling, this Dodge rides stiffly, and the expected handling benefit from the buttoned-down suspension never materializes, as the standard stability control steps in early to curtail any potentially dangerous antics. Too bad the 2008 Dodge Nitro can't deliver what its looks promise. Review continues below All models include fold-flat front passenger and second-row seats, which recline for added passenger comfort.

These features add peace of mind to the Dodge's excellent performance in government crash tests. Part-time four-wheel drive is available, but it lacks a low range. While the Dodge Nitro may have a Jeep under its skin, this SUV is not intended to go off-roading. There is wind, road, and engine noise. The ride gets particularly choppy at freeway speeds, and the steering is so vague that constant corrections are required to keep the Nitro pointed where you want it to go. Of course, it's not that the Dodge Nitro is unsafe--it's just not a great driving vehicle. The interior is basically comfortable, but some editors from TheCarConnection.com find the seating position a bit too high. Material quality is acceptable, but much of the plastic feels subpar compared to the class leaders. Both offer better performance and more refined interiors, but neither can match the Dodge's style. Reviews read by TheCarConnection.com show overwhelming approval for the direction Dodge has taken with the Dodge Nitro. Not only does the Dodge Nitro score very well in crash tests, it also comes loaded with a long list of desirable safety features. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the government agency responsible for crash testing, has subjected the 2008 Dodge Nitro to its full range of tests, and the results are impressive. The other major crash tester in the United States, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), has not yet tested this 2008 Dodge. The Nitro’s niche in the marketplace isn’t defined by its measurements, though, but by its bold, unique styling. As it is, the Nitro’s Jeep Liberty-derived architecture demands sacrifices in ride and handling. In models equipped with the smaller V6 and four-speed automatic, we often found ourselves wishing for either more power or another gear or two. Beneath it is a four-inch deep storage bin good for storing jumper cables or hiding a laptop. Other features include reclining rear seatbacks and an available fold-flat passenger seat that makes it easier to haul longer cargo or work on a laptop computer (while parked, of course). In between the base cloth and available leather seating, Nitro offers an exceptionally durable and stain-resistant seat fabric dubbed YES Essentials. The interior styling is in line with that of recent Dodge vehicles and includes a perceptible amount of average-grade plastics. Standard safety equipment includes front and front-side airbags, plus an electronic stability control system that includes rollover mitigation. Each combination is available in rear- or four-wheel drive, with automatic-equipped vehicles featuring a full-time four-wheel-drive system and manual models getting a part-time four-wheel-drive system. Maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds. Our Fair Purchase Prices have reflected real-world selling prices not far below those sticker prices. As for resale value, we expect the Nitro to be roughly comparable to the Xterra and Equinox. Lots of space and great on gas. Drives smoothly. Value Performance Quality Comfort Reliability Styling 1 1 Was this review helpful. This truck has been bulletproof. 192,000 miles and Not 1 problem associated with non-normal maintenance items.

I have a Lifetime power-train on it and I purchased the Added Care Lifetime wrap - havent used it yet. Thats just crazy good. OK 1 issue, had to pay for new lower control arms (Corroded) in April 2018 so they could do an alignment (1st one in 10 years) and that was just because my son slid into a curb. But you expect that from the salt in NE. Just an excellent built vehi cle. Even the original muffler is still on it. I remember when the Nitro first came out (2007) and all the publications po-pod them, boy were they wrong!! Read less Value Performance Quality Comfort Reliability Styling 10 2 Was this review helpful. I bought it brand new in December 2006 and 11 years and 178k miles later its still doing a great job. We hunt and fish so the Nitro hauls boats, kayaks and gear without any issues. I did add a 2 lift and bigger tires and it gets around off road as well as my 98 Jeep Cherokee. We only had to do routine maintenance until last year when I had to get new front hubs and replace the AC unit at 170k. Its been a great vehicle and id definitely get it again. We may earn money from the links on this page. The Nitro shares most of it components with the second-generation Jeep Liberty, but whereas the Liberty seeks the off-road route less traveled, the Nitro places on-road driving ahead of off-road readiness. The entry-level SXT version comes with a 210-hp, 3.7-liter V-6 and a six-speed manual transmission; a four-speed automatic is optional. A step up to the SLT trim level brings 17-inch aluminum wheels, body-colored moldings and bumpers, and a host of optional equipment from heated leather seats to chrome wheels. Rear-wheel drive is standard on all trim levels, but four-wheel drive can be had. None is terribly fun to drive, though, and the interior is cramped. Fuel economy isn’t very good, either. Click here to read our full review of the Dodge Nitro.

What’s New for 2008 For its second year of production, there are only minor changes to the Nitro. Three new colors are offered. A trailer-sway-mitigating algorithm designed to keep the Nitro and anything it might be lugging on course is added to the stability-control system. Optional park-assist sensors can be added to the rear bumper, a remote start option is offered, and an optional premium sound system with a subwoofer is new. Safety The Nitro has an excellent array of safety equipment—all of it standard. A full complement of airbags plus ABS, traction control, and stability control with a trailer-sway function and rollover mitigation are included. My son was in carseat in back and was fine, just mild headache. I had pretty severe whiplash since I was bent over getting my purse the moment we were hit, but otherwise the Nitro protected us very well. Nitro had frame and exhaust system damage, hitch was pushed into the middle of the spare tire, and husband was STILL able to drive it to follow the ambulance for me and my son, and drive it to the body shop for repairs. Got it fixed and back on the road. Other vehicle (newer Mazda SUV) that hit us was totalled and had to be drug off the street because they couldn't get it up on a tow truck. We plan on keeping this tank for a long time to come. Pros: Unbelievable turning radius (turns on a dime!) makes it so easy to park, regular AC plug in 2nd row for video games or whatever is really handy, sits up higher for safety and awesome vision, back storage has carpet on one side and hard rubber on other side - tough enough to carry firewood one day yet comfy enough to sit in the back for a tailgate football game the next day, reliability is great, on demand 4WD at turn of a knob, can take a pounding from a larger SUV going 45mph and keep on driving!

Cons: would expect better gas mileage for size, back end gets a little squirrely on turns in snow more than expected, wish back seats folded flat to be even with back storage area for our lab - I love everything else!If you want to have fun - get the SXT Manual. I've read reviews complaining about handling and not feeling comfortable cornering.wimps should stick to their little cars if they are scared being more then 4 inches off of the pavement and stay out of the SUV's. I own a RAM 1500 Quad cab and a Suburban (both 4X4's) - the Nitro handles like the smaller SUV it is. In the last 5 years we have replaced our 3 Cherokees:If you keep up you vehicles - they last. I wanted a on-road SUV with 4X4 that could handle light off-roading (i.e. towing a trailer with Quads back off the road a ways) or switch to 4X4 in snowy conditions. I wanted interior cargo space - at least comparable to the Cherokee's I have owned. I wanted power to get up and go - without using as much gas as the Suburban or Ram. My RAM is an ’06 ’ and the quality got me back into Dodge for this purchase. I wanted a smaller SUV - I didn't want a power puff car, I got more then I expected for the price and I am very happy with the Nitro.Baught it new. And it's still looks great and runs great. I love the extra options it has in it. Tv, satellite radio.I have had one issuse with this car. I heard some squeaking coming from the passenger wheel. Took it in and found out it had something to do with the 20 Inch Chrome wheels. They put a seal on it and haven't had any issue since then. I Dont know what you guys are talking about not being happy. Everyone I have talked to said they LOVE IT. Would buy another one if I could. It was easy to drive great on the highway and plenty of leg room and love sitting up high compared to sitting low in most cars.It seems to have a problem with the programing in the engine or something else in the drive system. Mine is a 4x2 with the 3.

6 and it has a problem between 35 and 45 MPH where it vibrates the whole truck if you try to accelerate. It feels as if you were driving a standard trans car and you needed to down shift. The transmission won't down shift and the engine is turnning anout 1500 RPMs. I hope the dealership gets it fixed this time or it's the third strike and Dodge will be getting a letter from me.There exterior is beautiful and not like all the other cars on the road. Inside you can seat 5 with plenty of room. Plenty of storage space in the back to load your camping gear. Can't wait to take her four wheeling.Well drove it the weekend and all cleared up. Got 23 mpg on the trip, hills and all. Then noticed rattle in back on slow speeds and idle. Found it to be items I stored in well under load and go shelf. Really great car and so pleased to have traded my PT Cruiser for it!!!It has plug one in the back and plenty of room in the back and even the trunk. Very CLEAN and drives great. Smoothe ride. However, with the launch of the all-new 2007 Nitro, Dodge looks ready to make up for lost time with an uber-tough SUV if there ever was one. A sliding cargo floor, not sold on the Jeep, let owners slide out the cargo bay floor 18 inches for easier loading; it held up to 400 pounds. The Nitro also had a fold-flat front-row passenger seat. See the Nitro and Liberty being built in Toledo, Ohio. The performance suspension used a heavier sway bar, with different springs, shocks, and bushings, capped off by 20-inch wheels. Steering was rack-and-pinion. Electronic Throttle Control (by-wire gas pedal) was used to work with the stability and traction control. Gears were hard-finished; the shift system was a multi-rail unit. The two-piece aluminum case had an integrated clutch housing for better stiffness and lower weight. New first-gear ratios and a wider spread helped both economy and performance; the new ratios were 4.46, 2.61, 1.72, 1.25, 1.0, and 0.84 (reverse, 4.06). The axle ratio was 3.
